Prevalence of myopia increasing rapidly

There is evidence that the prevalence of myopia is increasing significantly over just the past few decades.

Rate of myopia increasing rapidly.

Looks like decent future job security for optometrists in the United States. The article (written in 2009 by Susan Vitale) states that 1999-2004 rates were 41% versus 25% when done in 1971-1972.

Interesting indeed!

It’s cuz we’re lazy and don’t spend as much time going outside.

  2. Sarah Coles says:

There is no actual cure for myopia neither eyeglasses eye exercises, or eye drops.

    1. Before you started wearing glasses your eyes got worse.

    2. After you started wearing glasses your eyes got worse.

3 If you wear your glasses all the time your eyes will get worse

    4. If you quit wearing glasses totally your eyes will get worse.

    5. If you are nearsighted no matter what you do or don’t do your eyes will continue to get worse until you get into your mid 20′s, and then it will level off and stabilize on it’s own.

    6. The status of your vision is not affected by whether you wear glasses or not but is predetermined by your heredity, your genetics, your DNA.

There is a type of hard extended wear gas permeable contact lens that when fitted in a special way has been showing promise in reducing myopia. The technique is called orthokeratology.

Lastly there is lasik surgery which can remove, but will not stop the progression of myopia
